Alia Baré, the Nigerien designer based in Dakar, Senegal, has captivated the African fashion scene with her distinctive feminine silhouettes, bold prints, and a deep connection to her heritage. Known for blending traditional craftsmanship with modern elegance, she has become one of the continent’s most celebrated designers.
Her latest collection, first unveiled at Cape Town Fashion Week 2024, is now available at House of Nala stores and promises to be a must-have for fashion enthusiasts.
"My latest collection is an evolution of the narrative presented at Cape Town Fashion Week 2024," Baré explains.
"While it maintains the core themes of elegance and modernity, I’ve introduced new elements inspired by recent experiences and reflections. This progression allows for continuity and fresh perspectives, ensuring the collection resonates with long-standing followers and new audiences."
Inspired by Claude Monet’s iconic Water Lilies series, Baré reimagines impressionist art through an African lens. "This collection is deeply inspired by Claude Monet’s landscapes, particularly his Water Lilies series, but reinterpreted through African eyes," she shares.

"Monet’s mastery of light, reflection, and colour resonates with the way African landscapes shift and transform under the sun, creating endless variations of texture and hue."
Baré masterfully merges Monet’s fluid brushstrokes with African patterns and craftsmanship.
"I wanted to explore the dialogue between impressionism and African artistic heritage, merging the fluidity of Monet’s brushstrokes with the boldness of African patterns, textiles, and craftsmanship," she says. The result is a collection that translates the serenity of water into fabric through hand-dyed textiles, soft draping silhouettes, and layered transparencies that mimic water’s rippling effect.

"Through this collection," Baré continues, "I sought to capture the serenity of water, the depth of natural beauty, and the interplay of colors that tell stories beyond borders. Just as Monet painted movement and light on canvas, I translate that onto fabric—using hand-dyed textiles, soft draping silhouettes, and layered transparencies."
Baré’s designs also carry a deeper message.
"The message behind this collection is a fusion of artistic legacies, showing how African creativity can reinterpret Western classics in a way that is fresh, original, and deeply rooted in our identity. It also celebrates how nature, in all its fleeting beauty, continues to be an endless source of inspiration across cultures and time periods."
In challenging times, Baré finds inspiration in resilience. "I find inspiration in the resilience and beauty of everyday life. Engaging with artisans, exploring nature, and reflecting on personal experiences fuel my creativity. I believe that adversity often leads to profound artistic expression."

Loyal customers can expect designs that embody her signature elegance while offering versatility for various occasions. "The collection offers pieces that transition seamlessly from day to night," she notes.
