In a world where fashion often races towards the future, South African fashion brand, Beautiful African Raiment (BAR) takes a thoughtful step back, weaving the vibrant threads of African heritage into modern masterpieces.
Founded by Rirhandzu Nukeri, who is inspired by familial legacy and cultural pride, BAR's knitwear collections are more than just garments—they're stories told in fabric, echoing the past while embracing the future.
The latest BAR knitwear collection for AW2024 has arrived at House of Nala Sandton City.
We had a conversation with Rirhandzu, delving into the inspirations, materials, and processes that bring her signature knitwear collections to life.
Drawing from Personal History
At the core of BAR's knitwear collections lies a profound connection to the designer's personal history. The inspiration stems from two significant figures: the designer's late grandfather and father. "My grandfather had a unique sense of style that left an indelible mark on me. His fashion choices continue to influence my work. Additionally, the Pringle sweaters my father cherished evoke a sense of warmth and tradition that I strive to infuse into my creations."
The Tsonga Influence
The Blanket Cowry Knit Sweater
The designer's Tsonga heritage plays a pivotal role in sparking creativity. Known for their vibrant celebration of colour, pattern, and texture, the Tsonga culture is a rich tapestry of diverse and intricate designs. "Our cultural heritage fuels my imagination, allowing me to blend traditional elements with contemporary design.” This blend is evident in the use of vivid patterns and varied textures that tell a story of heritage and modernity.
The Elegance of Viscose
BAR's knitwear collections predominantly feature viscose, a material chosen for its exceptional comfort and drape. "Viscose is soft, breathable, and holds vibrant colours and intricate patterns beautifully.”
This choice aligns perfectly with BAR's design philosophy, creating pieces that are visually appealing and comfortable. The luxurious feel and elegant drape of viscose enhance the flow and movement of the garments, making them flattering for the wearer.
A Modern Take on Traditional Patterns
BAR's design process is a thoughtful journey that intertwines high-quality craftsmanship with deep cultural connections. The brand incorporates mud-cloth (bagolanfini) patterns, a traditional African textile art known for its rich symbolism, into modern prints. "Each pattern tells a story. I carefully select elements that resonate with my personal narrative and the values I wish to convey through my work."
This process involves extensive research into the history and meanings behind various mud-cloth symbols. The designer collaborates with skilled artisans and utilizes advanced knitting techniques to bring these designs to life. The result is a collection that honours heritage while showcasing the versatility and beauty of traditional patterns in a contemporary context.
A Brand for All
BAR's knitwear collection for AW2024 cater to both men and women, each with distinct characteristics yet maintaining a cohesive brand identity. "For women, my designs aim to encapsulate sophistication and fun while maintaining an air of elegance and poise," the designer explains. The garments feature intricate details, tassels, luxurious textures, vibrant colours, playful patterns, and flattering silhouettes.
For men, the approach emphasizes unique, silent elegance with understated luxury. "The goal is to create garments that exude quiet sophistication," says the designer. Subtle patterns, rich textures, and classic yet contemporary cuts define the menswear line, designed for the discerning man who appreciates high-quality knitwear.
Cosmopolitan African Fashion
BAR's vision of "Cosmopolitan African Fashion" embodies a harmonious blend of global sophistication and rich African heritage. "It's about merging the timeless beauty of African culture with the dynamic, ever-evolving world of contemporary fashion," the designer explains. This fusion creates a style that is globally sophisticated and authentically African, appealing to the modern, fashion-forward individual.
Looking Ahead
The future of BAR is bright, with aspirations for global recognition and meaningful cultural impact. The brand aims to promote African heritage and craftsmanship on a global scale, contributing to a broader understanding and appreciation of Africa's rich traditions.
In essence, BAR's knitwear collections celebrate the beauty and richness of African heritage while embracing modern sophistication. The garments are not just fashion statements but narratives that honour the past and look forward to the future.
