Black Dandyism Is The Cape Town Fashion Week Dress Code

Black Dandyism Is The Cape Town Fashion Week Dress Code

In 2012, Solange Knowles arrived in Cape Town alongside award-winning director Melina Matsoukas. Their mission? Filming the music video for the hit single Losing You.

The video’s opening scenes juxtapose the stark surroundings of KwaLanga, a township in Cape Town, with its vibrant inhabitants—men dressed in bold, brightly coloured suits, Union Jack ties, and carrying canes.

Despite the poverty around them, these men use fashion to assert their identity and pride. Their confidence and style overshadow their circumstances, capturing the transformative power of self-expression.

This is the essence of Black Dandyism, a fashion movement where Black individuals use clothing to express individuality, challenge stereotypes, and reclaim dignity. From Les Sapeurs of the Congo and oSwenka of isicathamiya fame to Izikhothane, Black Dandyism has grown into a cultural statement.

With Cape Town Fashion Week: The Edit SS24 just days away, AFI proudly announces the event’s dress code: Black Dandyism.

On Saturday, 30 November 2024, at the Hollywood Kenilworth Racecourse, over 25 designers will present their latest collections in a full-day celebration of fashion. A standout moment will be the AFI Fastrack show, featuring looks by past finalists inspired by Black Dandyism’s bold elegance.

The chosen theme aligns with the 2025 Met Gala's focus: Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, set to debut at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. As a key partner of this global event, AFI underscores Africa’s influence in shaping the fashion world.

Mastering Black Dandyism

Dandyism embodies elegance, sophistication, and attention to detail. Achieving this aesthetic requires a balanced approach to timeless elements and modern flair.
We looked to award winning style expert, Menzi Mcunu for guidance on how to get the Dandyism look correct.
  1. Tailoring is Key: Invest in impeccably fitted pieces. The cornerstone of Dandyism is clothing that complements your body shape.
  2. Quality Over Quantity: Choose high-quality fabrics and craftsmanship. A few timeless, well-made items surpass a wardrobe full of mediocre pieces.
  3. Classic Pieces: Incorporate versatile staples like blazers, waistcoats, trousers, and shirts that can transition from casual to formal.
  4. Elegant Accessories: Add sophistication with pocket squares, cravats, brooches, or tasteful jewelry. Women can elevate their look with elegant hats, gloves, or scarves.
Black Dandyism Inspiration

For Men

  • Mix and Match: Blend traditional items with modern pieces. Pair a tailored blazer with a golf shirt, scarf, and jeans for a contemporary twist.
  • Footwear Matters: Choose quality shoes. Brogues, loafers, and elegant boots are stylish yet understated.

For Women

  • Balance Masculine and Feminine: Combine masculine pieces like blazers or trousers with feminine touches like blouses or skirts.
  • Minimalist Jewelry: Opt for understated elegance, such as pearls or simple gold and silver pieces.
  • Refined Hair and Makeup: Keep hairstyles sleek and makeup classic to enhance your look without overwhelming it.

General Tips

  1. Avoid Overdoing It: Stick to one or two statement pieces and keep the rest of your outfit simple to maintain elegance.
  2. Personal Touch: Incorporate items that reflect your personality and lifestyle, making the style uniquely yours.
  3. Confidence is Key: Confidence elevates any outfit. Wear your look with poise and self-assurance.
  4. Modern Fabrics and Cuts: Use contemporary materials and designs to add freshness to classic Dandy aesthetics.
  5. Layering: Create depth by layering pieces thoughtfully. A well-layered outfit can be both practical and visually striking.
