Papy Kaluw, the DRC-native and South Africa based designer, has always been inspired by the continent in how he approaches his designs for his label, Urban Zulu.
His latest collection, Bulongo, is a stunning testament to his deep-rooted connection to African heritage.
At the heart of the Bulongo collection lies Bògòlanfini-print fabric. Native to Mali, Bògòlanfini is renowned for its intricate patterns, rich colours, and deep cultural significance.
Traditionally, Bògòlanfini is created using a mud-dyeing process that involves soaking the fabric in a natural indigo dye and then adding patterns with a mud resist technique. The result is a fabric that is not only visually striking but also infused with centuries of history and tradition.
